Now that we are using Byetta in type 1 and type 2 its time to talk about what they are doing that is alike. The type 2 patients are “softer” and easier to keep control as we start treatment with Byetta. All sulfonylureas are stopped and the only medications that persist are those that will not “push” the glucose down. The type 1 patient is more difficult to explain how to cut the insulin and all the correct instincts that made good control for those with type 1 are wrong for those people when starting Byetta. When I am told that “I'm taking 30% more insulin than before I was using Byetta and more insulin resistant” and I advise drastic cuts in insulin, It is very hard for anyone to believe that my advice is correct.
What’s even more fun is the discarding of medication. One gentleman today, two weeks on Byetta, had a little more than half the medication he was on discontinued. Another person with type 1, one month into the Byetta process, had a third of the remaining medications discontinued.
Who has ever taught anyone how to discontinue medications, much less insulin? Who has told anyone to reduce their insulin 90% from their usual dosage? Listen to all this though because if you follow those who are just slightly ahead of you, you will find your way into a new world. It’s your time.

I was wondering if I would be a candidate for Byetta, I was dx'ed with DMI 14 yrs ago after developing it during pregnancy. I really just want to use it for it's weight loss properties. I am never able to lose weight even though I workout intensely at least 5 days a week and watch my diet. I am currently on 22U of Lantus Q HS and a S/S of Humalog. Appreciate any comment.
Byetta has an additional attribute; it tends to reverse all complications be they for type one or two. You have to know how much insulin is left and how much brown fat you have to know if it will help.
In the course of the decision process for deciding whether or not Byetta would work, we measure endogenous insulin with C peptide after a meal. We are always astonished to find that many people like you are still making insulin. The insulin you are taking keeps the insulin you are making intake. For most people, Byetta is a big help.
