Anecdotally, I was diagnosed with Type I as an adult (LADA) and have used Byetta for 26 months. Initially (within a few months), I was able to drop my basal insulin (Levemir) use in half. Then I was very stable in my dosing of both the basal insulin and mealtime Novalog (just needed at dinner). Now, I have recently cut the Levemir again by about 1/3 and only sometimes use Novalog at dinner (depending on the food I'm having). Also, my A1C levels have dropped from the high of 6.9 - 7.0 to 6.1 - 6.2 for the last 6 months. I think the Byetta has been valuable for me.
