It is hard to believe that we would not want our A1c to be normal as a person without diabetes.
I think it of more concern how we get to normal. Eating high carb diets and taking industral doses of medications is certainly not the way to get to normal.
The Epic-Norfolk study showed that even with an a1c of 6% over 5% increases your risk for cardiovascular death by 28%.

Since 1991 I have had no hospital admissions and less than a half percent advancing complications by focusing on everything else but A1c. That did result in good values however.
