Help Save the Diabetic Youth Foundation

Help Save the Diabetic Youth Foundation - Bearskin needs You!
A Message from the Executive Director

Dear Friends & Family,

As DYF plans for our 72nd year providing learning and memories, we face the toughest economic times in the history of our agency.

As of last week, we have lost over $250,000 in funding from past corporate and foundation supporters. Because of this we are we projecting nearly a 30% reduction in donations support. While some was expected, much has been completely unexpected. Corporate and foundation support is critical in bridging the funding gap between what we charge, the many scholarships we give to financially challenged families, and the actual cost of putting on safe, high quality, and life-changing programs for so many children, teens and their families.

Since 1938 DYF has been deeply committed to our children and their families. We are committed to providing the best place for learning how to be the best manager of diabetes, offering the support everyone needs to flourish, and the laughter we all need to energize our souls. We work hard to maximize our very limited resources by leveraging our small and extremely qualified staff with the great support from our medical community from all over California. We combine that passion with effective management of donations; spending at least 84 cents of each dollar on our great programs and services.

As our financial situation stands today, we will be forced to eliminate some programs in order for DYF to continue core programs, including within Bearskin Meadow Summer Camp.

To help preserve our great organization and the programs it provides, effective immediately, DYF will eliminate the 6-Day Kids Camp and Family Camp 4 at Bearskin Meadow Camp this summer. Additionally, we must eliminate the Fall SuperBuddy program and the Fall Family Weekend Education Retreat. This ultimately translates to serving 370 less kids and families at what we know are life-changing programs.

We have not only cut programs to offset our financial struggles, DYF has also reduced our small staff even more through lay-offs, eliminated any raises and reduced salaries for the remainder of the staff, and is looking at every little expense to ensure success for our remaining programs. Unfortunately, even with these reductions, we are still projecting more than a $200,000 deficit, which is again, not feasible for us to sustain our core programs.

DYF has posted a YouTube video with a personal message from Mats Wallin, DYF Executive Director, for more information on what is occurring go to youtube.com and search Diabetic Youth Foundation.

DYF must generate at least $200,000 before camp just so we can confidently finish the year without further attrition in programs and services. If we can raise $100,000 in new funding before May 25th we should be able to bring back Family Camp 4. YOU CAN HELP make that happen.

Last year, we served over 1800 individuals from 600 families with our services, and now we need the collective power of each of our families to help us.

So, how can you help?

We cannot expect anyone to give DYF a single check for $250,000, but we can ask for 10,000 donations of $25. What that means is that if each DYF family asked 25-50 friends to give $25, we would be able to ensure we can provide the current reduced services, but we could also hopefully bring back some of the programs we have had to eliminate.

We need you to think small, but also to think BIG.

We are calling this effort... "Save the DYF...$25 at a Time"

With the help of Firstgiving.com, making a gift of $25 or more is as easy as clicking here.

On behalf of all the kids and families we serve, we need our community to join together to help ensure DYF can continue to offer life-changing programs.

If you have other suggestions on how to raise immediate funds for DYF, please contact the DYF office and ask for Paula or Mats. Anyone at the DYF office is happy to discuss and help with your efforts! Some ideas include doing an individual fundraising activity, asking for support from your local service clubs or community groups (Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, etc.), or any other activity that would raise funds for our programs and services. See the sidebar for tips!

Again, thank you for your continued support of DYF programs and services. We are in unprecedented times, but we remain confident that with the help of our strong community, we will weather this incredible storm and come out better for it at the end.

As we sing at the closing of every campfire at BMC; No one is an island, no one stands alone...We will get through this together.

Warmly,
The DYF Staff and Board of Directors

Information on Vitamin D

This discussion on prevention of CA of Breast and CA of the colon is on the following link.

Most importantly, if you can’t link up with your doctor for any reason, you can order your own test and link up with a large study that will involve many other aspects of disease prevention with Vitamin D.

You can also see the “open letter to scientists” that enables you to sign up for a continuous flow of scientific information.

Just for the record, here is another very good source of information on Vitamin D that can be sent to you directly.

Effect of a multifactorial intervention on mortality in type 2 diabetes.
N Engl J Med 2008 2;358(6):580-91

About eight years ago approximately 50% reduction in cardiometabolic disease was obtained with “intensive” treatment. With the end of the study at about 13 years the patients were continued to be followed to see if this reduction would be sustained.

A 45% decrease in total mortality, a 57% decrease in cardiometabolic mortality, and a 59% decrease in cardiometabolic events was noted.

The authors felt that the main reason for this was aggressive treatment of blood pressure and lipids. The changes in the blood glucose values (HbA1c) were not markedly changed. Note that the recent ACCORD trial showed an increase in death with lower glucose.

This indicates that reducing increased blood pressure and targeting waist circumference or perhaps through novel targets of intervention will help individuals reduce the risk of cardiometabolic
disease.

Vitamin D3 Spray

As the chemist with Mayor Pharmaceutical Laboratories, I am responding to the request for information about the bioavailability of the vitamin D3 in Dr. Joe's Vitamin D3 molecular oral spray.

Bioavailability is defined as the amount of the active component that actually enters the systemic circulation. Due to the fact that the cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) in the spray is delivered into the oral cavity as a fine mist, the bioavailability is known to be some 10 times greater than that of most oral tablets, based on information from the PDR which shows the clear superiority of spray delivery over some other forms of delivery.

With the molecular oral spray, there is no dependency on disintegration for the release of the active component, thus 100% is available for absorption. However, with tablets there are brand variations which depend upon the disintegration characteristics of each specific brand of tablet.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,
Clive R. Spray
